1. A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. Its uses include monitors for computers? instrument panels, and other devices ranging from aircraft cockpit displays, to every-day consumer devices, such as video players, gaming devices, clocks, watches, calculators, and telephones.
Among its major features are its lightweight construction, its portability, and its ability to be produced in much larger screen sizes than are practical for the construction of cathode ray tube (CRT) display technology. Its low electrical power consumption enables it to be used in battery-powered electronic equipment. It is an electronically-modulated optical device made up of any number of pixels filled with liquid crystals and arrayed in front of a light source (backlight) or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome. The earliest discovery leading to the development of LCD technology, the discovery of liquid crystals, dates from 1888.By 2008, worldwide sales of televisions with LCD screens had surpassed the sale of CRT units.
2. Applications.
The best known application of thin-film transistor is in TFT LCDs, an implementation of LCD technology, Transistor are embedded within the panel itself, reducing crosstalk between pixels and improving image stability.
As of 2008, many color LCD TVs and monitors use this technology, TFT panels heavily used in digital radiography applications in general radiography, it is used in both direct and indirect capture as a base for the image receptor in medical radiography.
The most beneficial aspect of TFT technology is a separate transistor for each pixel on the display. as each transistor is small, the amount of charge needed to control it is also small. This allows for very fast re-drawing of display.
Prior to TFT, passive matrix LCD displays could not keep up with fast moving images. A mouse dragged across the screen, for example, from point A to point B, would disappear between the two points, A TFT monitor can track the mouse, resulting in a display that can be used for video, gaming and all forms multimedia.
